Hi Everyone

It was an honour to be present at long time Club Member Brian Stafford-Bush’s funeral, such a wonderful caring and generous man and to learn so much more about Brian, also running into many people we knew and bringing friends and family together.  It was a beautiful service and a perfect goodbye to Brian. RIP dear friend.

We were hoping to have the Squid Lady along as Guest Speaker for this next Meeting but unfortunately Kate Bolstad is unavailable for this month, details later of her presentation.

Not all disappointment, there are a few that have been asking for the next Meeting to be a pizza night, you will be happy to know that I will be arranging a pizza feed for the next Meeting.   Arrive around 7pm. – one they maybe hot and two there maybe a little left.

10th July 2023

Hi Everyone

What is everyone up to with these wet miserable days?  We have tried to get out on bush walks and bike rides, but cold wind and rain are not pleasant.

We had a very successful attendance at the NZUA AGM in Whitianga last weekend, six from our Club attended.  Interesting Guest Speakers, plenty of great food provided, catching up with other Cubs and what they are up to, a visit to the kina factory, diving, spa treatments and a number of other activities on offer.

Just a reminder of the changes for this coming Wednesday night’s Meeting Instead of the usual, we are having a mid-year Christmas Dinner at the Bays Club, Browns Bay.  Arriving from 6pm onwards, drinks from the bar, sorry haven’t had the price of the meal confirmed yet.  It may just be off the menu or a plated meal with desert included.

I need to confirm numbers, please email me or ring me if you are attending the dinner, I have had a couple confirm and a couple of apologies.

We need someone to step up and build another website for us as the present one will close down at the end of this year.  Is there anyone out there that can help?

The last Meeting in June with a pot luck dinner and celebrating a couple of birthdays was very well attended. A pizza meal was suggested for the August meeting as when food is available we seem to get a far better turn out.  Lots of other suggestions for entertainment through the winter – like ten pin bowling, go-carts, and the zip-line on Waiheke.  Who is up to organizing a trip for Club Members.  Let me know and I will send out the information to the Members.

I have stepped down from the Barn Dance I was organizing in Okura, it has been taken over by Tracey from the Okura Rate Payers Assn.

There was a couple selling their dive gear, I sent the information out separately – let me know if you didn’t receive the email.

12th – 18th July 2023 – Minke Whale Expedition on Mike Balls ‘MV Spoilsport’ – Great Barrier Reef – There is one place left available on this trip – discounted price as someone had to pull out through sickness. This is a Golden opportunity at such short notice – I went last year and can guarantee it was an amazing trip – not to be missed.  If keen contact info@divezonetauranga.co.nz     +64 7 578 4050 – Tony or Liz from DiveZone Tauranga.

9th August – Wednesday – 7.00pm – Dive Club Meeting – Club RoomsNorthcote Road ExtensionAllan Dixon was contacting the squid lady – Kate Bolin – to be confirmed.

24th August to 4th September 2023 – Diving the Philippinesdiving with Magic Resorts both Anda in Bohol and Magic in Moalboal in Cebu.  If you are keen and for further details please contact Ray Aucott – ray@packyabags.com   We have travelled on a number of trips around Fiji and the Philippines that Ray has organised.

9th – 29th November – 10 days – P&O Cruise around NZ – Auckland and back to AucklandSeveral Club Members are on this cruise if anyone else would like to join the trip please contact Margaret for further details.

Keep Safe everyone, happy and safe diving.

Cheers Margaret  Howard

15th March 2022

Hi to All

It is a long time since I have done an update, Denis is sending out the newsletter each month but very little else is happening.  Even our Meetings are poorly attended, and until things start to settle down it was decided to postpone our AGM and Meeting in April and hold the next Meeting in May to see if we can get a few more people along.

Remember Denis is always on the look out for articles to put in the newsletter.

So many things have been cancelled, overseas dive trips and the two Fiordland trips Club Members were booked on.  Even advertised Dive shop trips have been postponed from lack of numbers. Our Barn Dance has been postponed, DO YOU STILL WANT THIS TO GO AHEAD WHEN WE ARE ABLE TO HOLD IT..???  Other things are still taking place but with caution.

The Dolphin Underwater Club support Dacre Cottage and some Members attend regular working bees to help out with planting, gardening, painting, mowing etc.  The working bees are held the 1st Sunday of the month starting 9am – delish morning tea always served.  The inside of the Cottage is due for a paint, who is keen to give a hand..?

Check out the website or Google the Cottage if you are keen to learn more http://www.dacre.org.nz › about-dacre-cottage

Yukon Dive have their boat ‘G Force’ with the luxury of the back lift based at Marsden Cove Marina, Ruakaka. Please let me know if you would like me to organise a Club trip to the Hen and Chicks or Mokohinau Islands.  There has also been some interest in booking another Club Trip to the Poor Knights Islands.  I need feedback, please let me know your thoughts – 0274839839 or email marg.howard@xtra.co.nz

Matt Gouge sent an interesting email through regarding the ‘Divecat’ that was run out of the Tamaki River by Norman Holtzmann. Matt had been on it a couple of times. It sank in the Firth of Thames in 40m of water 2 years ago. Ziggy, a dive buddy of Matt’s was on board at the time and lost most of his gear.  Norman decided to salvage the boat and has been trying for the last year or so. He has a lot of cleaning up to do that’s for sure!   https://youtu.be/DLaGD4omFVo

21st July 2021

Hi Everyone

It has been sometime since an update from me and I need to mention a few things in the pipeline.  Especially the coming dinner and movie to be held at Ryder’s Cinema and Restaurant, details below.

No diving in the pipeline though.  Even the Wahine day last Saturday the 17th was cancelled as the weather was atrocious.  Only social events taking place at this stage, which I don’t mind organising if it helps to keep the Club alive and active.  Certainly the potluck dinner and BBQ with music was a great successful evening.  Poor attendance though as it clashed with a rugby game.

Please note these dates in your diary –

28th July – Wednesday – 12 noon Luncheon at the Bays Club, Anzac Avenue, Browns Bay.  For those seniors and retired folk, the last luncheon we had was well attended, even a couple had the day off.  Please let me know and I will confirm numbers for our booked table.  Margaret 0274839839 or email marg.howard@xtra.co.nz

31st July – Saturday – Movie Night and Roast Dinner – Ryder’s of Avondale – 177 Riverdale Road, Avondale – 5.30pm onwards – (formerly Westwind Theatre) $35pp includes dinner, ice cream and movie (dinner around 7pm). BYO drinks and nibbles– book now with Allan Dixon 09 2969182 (night) or 021 994 593 email allanandjilldixon@xtra.co.nz

As a Club we have been enjoying this evening for around 25 years (Tom Butler would know exactly).  We stopped going for a year or so through lack of numbers, get in early to book your place now.  The movie is ‘Going in Style’ A comedy with Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine.  Payment into the Dive Club ANZ Bank Account Number 06 0122 0074227 00  or by cash on the night of $35pp or $32pp if you don’t want an ice cream. This dinner and movie social night is open to all Members, family and friends.  Peter and I are going and will be able to share transport if anyone is wanting a lift.

A little info and history about Ryder’s –

Ryder’s of Avondale has been operating on the family homestead since 1940.  Jack Ryder started the Ryder’s Estate museum and John Ryder opened the West Wind Cinema Club with a vision to provide a venue where groups could enjoy a delicious meal together, watch a film of their choice in the private theatre as well as the opportunity to view the Ryder Family’s collection of memorabilia and Antiques.

Today Clint Ryder continues his grandfather’s vision and has built Ryder’s into a unique and highly successful function venue.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Home of the Famous Roast Dinner and making your next event with us an amazing one.

8th August – Sunday – 10am – 2pm EMR Working Bee and Snorkel – Volunteers needed as the Experiencing Marine Reserves Trailers need a clean out, sort through and repairs.  The trailers will be at Whangateau Holiday Park – lunch will be provided.  Then a snorkel either at Goat Island, Whangateau Harbour or Tawharanui Regional Park – weather dependent.

11th August – Wednesday – 7.00pm – Dive Club Meeting – Club RoomsNorthcote Road Extension A social night with some yummy winter warmers, come and try our mulled wine.

21st August – Saturday 9am – 2pm – Experiencing Marine Reserves – Training Day at Dive Club Rooms – Northcote Road Extension – Lunch provided – There will be pool training at the Glenfield Pools as well. Senior Guides to help out.

4th September – Saturday – 7pm – Barn Dance and Music Evening – to be held in the Okura Community Hall – We held one of these a few years back and it was a great success and an enjoyable evening. We have a caller organised with his own square dance music, a singer Erina Williams who sung for us before and possible another local band will also play. $10pp door entry and bring a plate for supper.  Also bring your own drinks. Who is keen to join in for this event?  Details to be confirmed later.

18th September, 10am – Whitianga Oceans Festival This iconic Festival has evolved from the Whitianga Scallop Festival to the Whitianga Oceans Festival. It’s a fabulous day out celebrating delicious local seafood, fantastic music, refreshing beverages and great entertainment. 21 Campbell Street Whitianga, New Zealand 3510

Sorry no dives booked at this stage, but check out the shops websites as they are still running trips, please let me know if you have something in mind.

30th March 2021

Hi Everyone

Well April is here, this year is just running away.  The end of scallop season tomorrow the 31st I know there are limited scallops around now and you have to go far afield to get a sample.  Hence I have not had a fresh scallop this past season.

We have our AGM at the next Meeting 14th April, please come and support us, your Club – details of the evening below.

I had a lovely note from Eileen Slark.  Since Tony passed, Eileen has been our Honorary Patron.  She still has very fond memories of the Club and Tony’s and her involvement over the years. Her Message –

Just a quick line to say Hi!!!!          Many years ago I was Secretary to the Dolphin Club for 2 to 3 years and found ‘It’ to be an interesting and rewarding job!!      Now I am 87 yrs old and living in a retirement complex in Albany on the North Shore and it is good to see the Club still going!!      Good luck Eileen Slark

It has been a busy and very rewarding few weeks with Experiencing Marine Reserves.  They are quietening down now coming into the winter months.  The Kai Iwi Lakes and Lake Rototoa snorkel and kayak days was amazing with everyone experiencing a sand dune lake and fresh water snorkel.  The night snorkel at Kai Iwi was the best with the koura coming out to feed, a fresh water crayfish much like a small prawn.  It is great to see a number of Club Members helping out and volunteering for these occasions.  Peter is always back up and safety on the kayak and I am in the water with the parents and families. A great treat for lunch at Lake Rototoa, the local farmers bought their fresh venison to BBQ for us, yummy steaks and their homemade sausages. A very busy and informative day.

There has been quite a few going out on dive trips lately, if you are looking to share transport and the trip with others let me know and I will advertise what you are booked on.  Garry Cozens is going to the Poor Knights this coming weekend.  There were four of us on a Yukon Poor Knights trip last weekend.

I am still waiting to hear if we can book a Fiordland Trip, these details should be available any day now.  There are five from the Club wanting to go, if you are keen to join our group, please let me know.

There was mention of a dinner out at the last Meeting, sorry I have not put any effort into that at this stage.  There is a great Thai place in Albany, who is keen. Let me know at the next Meeting.

3rd April, Easter Saturday – kayak the Puhoi River and lunch and the Puhoi pub. Meet at Wenderholm Regional Park 10am.  Paddle up with the incoming tide (high 12.49pm), have lunch and then paddle back with the outgoing tide.  Bring your own kayak if you have one or ring Puhoi River Kayak Hire on 027 284 1672 we have one spare kayak at the moment also a couple of spaces on the small motor boat that will be accompanying the kayaks on the river.

17th March 2021

We have had some very busy but rewarding times lately helping out with Experiencing Marine Reserves. Goat Island and Takapuna last weekend were very popular and the conditions were great for taking the young and older into the water. There is nothing like a family experiencing snorkelling for the first time, teaching them how to put on a mask and how to use a snorkel.  Boogie boards on the way out and coming back to shore on their own with new found confidence.

This coming weekend we are up at the Kai Iwi Lakes, this is also proving to be a very busy time. Snorkel, kayak, paddle boarding and a night snorkel, all gear provided.  Dive if you want to bring your own gear.  Let me know if you want more information.  It is all on EMR website though.

20th March – Saturday – Snorkel Kai Iwi Lakes with Experiencing Marine Reserves – Free camping accommodation if you stay for the night snorkel.  Check out the website https://www.emr.org.nz/index.php/events/snorkel-days  for other snorkel days around the Country.  If you have any trouble booking for these days, please let me know.

27th March – Saturday – Club trip to Poor Knights Dive with Yukon Dive – 8.30 at Marina Tutukaka – $200 two tank dives on the Yukon boat ‘Arrow’.  There are four from the Club going on this trip so far.  If you want to join us please book direct with Jo on 021 2611779, there is still places available.  We will probably stay at the camp in Tutukaka on the Friday night to save such an early start on the Saturday morning. Give me a ring if you want to share transport.

28th March – Sunday – Explore Lake Rototoa – 23 Donohue Road, South Head 10am – 2.30pm with Experiencing Marine Reserves in partnership with Auckland Sea kayaks, Auckland Council and Aoteoroa Lakes.  Bring your own kayak to join in or your dive gear to dive the lake after the event. 14th April – Wednesday – 7.00pm – Dive Club Meeting – Club Rooms – Northcote Road Extension – Pizza Night and AGM.  Come along and renew your Membership and show your support to keep our wonderful Club running.  In 2024 we will be celebrating our 70th Anniversary. A huge achievement. As a Club Member you are also affiliated to the NZUA, the NZ Underwater Association.

5th March 2021

I mentioned this before if anyone has any Club History, trophies, photos, records, old minutes, a copy of the constitution etc. please let me know as most of our history has been misplaced over the years.  We are still trying to track down the Club photo albums that a Member was putting together for us.  They were at the 60th Anniversary but no one remembers who took them home to store them.  If you have any idea please let Denis know on 0278 970922, or Margaret 0274 839839.

We had the cleanup around the Quarry before this last COVID lock down.  The Lake was out as they had a regatta on.  Still a very successful day with loads of rubbish collected, (see attached photo), a disgusting messy job around the edges of the Quarry, thanks to Olivia and Gui for helping out on the snorkel side. No diving as the viz was less than 1m. Followed by a delish BBQ for all the helpers with Gui’s special Brazilian steak. YUMMY.

There will be a Meeting next Wednesday night the 10th March, as we don’t get 100 people along these days, (Level 2 lockdown).  Denis is working on the newsletter, check it out, it will be on the website Sunday night.  What are you doing over Easter Weekend, want to share your ideas?

A few Members have been hiring gear from Auckland Scuba, they are located 2/49 Arrenway Drive, Albany.  Nick Wyatt, the Store Manager has been looking after us with a great discount. Thank you Nick.

10th March – Wednesday – 7.00pm – Dive Club Meeting – Club Rooms – Northcote Road ExtensionCOVIDLevel 2 the Meeting will go ahead.  7pm start seems to suit most, let me know your preference. A social evening with a drink and supper while we view ‘The Shipwreck – The Tragedy of the Boyd’.  Chris Nipper will be along to give a talk on some of his adventures diving ship wrecks around NZ.

A lot of the organised trips would have been cancelled because of Level 3 with COVID.  We had two Members on the Dusky and Doubtful Sounds trip but had to also pull out as they were not allowed to leave Auckland.

13th March – Saturday – 12noon – 3pm – Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre“Sea” MERC Day! – Annual Seaweek Family Event – There will be a range of ocean activities on offer dependent on conditions.  There’s a chance you could have a go at sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding or just come have a look at the educational displays and enjoy the beautiful facility by the sea.  Bring your togs & a towel!  Donations welcome – further details on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/229441645411048  (Check to see if still on with Lockdown 2 as there will be more than 100 people).

20th January 2021

Happy New Year Everyone

I hope you have been out there enjoying our wonderful summer and beautiful country, lots of beach and blowing bubbles.  This place we call home is a pretty special place.

A number of Club Members have been joining Experiencing Marine Reserves and we have had some amazing days, including Rotoroa Island, Waiheke Island and last weekend Mototapu Island.  Being a Senior Guide and Kayak support is very rewarding.  If you are interested in getting involved let me know and I will forward your details to the EMR Leaders here in the Auckland region.  There is an Okura kayak and SUP paddle coming up and snorkelling Kai Iwi Lakes. Room for a tent or camper accommodation.  Check out their website www.emr.org.nz

We have also done a little kelp gardening at Enclosure Bay on Waiheke Island, a first for me and very interesting. The idea is monitoring and trying to prevent kina barrens which are rapidly taking over in many places.

Our next Club Meeting is on the 10th February, and Denis will have the newsletter out and on our website around the 6-7th February as a reminder.

24th January – Sunday – There are a few Club Members meeting at Tawharanui Regional Park Anchor Bay car park on Sunday (24th) from 9am on.  We will have a small boat, some are diving, some are snorkelling and some families just coming for a picnic and swim. If it is your first visit to the area, it is easy to find on Google Maps.  Bring your lunch and something to put on the BBQ after our second dive.  Let me know if you are keen to join us just in case I have to ring around with the weather forecast.

10th February – Wednesday – 7.00pm – Dive Club Meeting – Club Rooms – Northcote Road Extension – BBQWelcome back everyone, bring your holiday photos and a salad and desert to share.  The Club will provide sausages, or if you prefer bring your own steak.

13th December 2020

Hi Everyone

9th January 2021 – Waiheke EMR Snorkel Day and the 10th January EMR Waiheke Kayak and Stand up Paddle Day

16th January 2021 – EMR day on Motutapu Island  – Check out their website for further details. www.emr.org.nz

I have copied over the new rules for crayfish, although they have been around for some time now, for your info just in case you haven’t caught up with the changes.

New Crayfish rules – Don’t be caught out!

Daily bag limits

Maximum of 6 rock lobster (both species combined) on any one day.

Except Te Arai Point, Auckland to Cape Runaway where a total of 3 spiny rock lobsters can be taken, and the remainder (up to 6 in total) can be packhorse rock lobster. If no spiny rock lobsters are taken at the same time, 6 packhorse lobsters can be taken.

Rules changing in CRA2 area from 1 July 2020

Spiny rock lobster minimum size

Measure the tail width in a straight line between the tips of the two large (primary) spines on the second segment of the tail. If you are unsure of the sex, use the 60mm measurement.

Packhorse lobster minimum size

Measure the tail length along the underside in a straight line from the rear of the calcified bar on the first segment to the tip of the middle fan of the tail. Must have a tail length of at least 216mm (male and female).

Additional rules and protections

There are rules and protections for gathering rock lobster/crayfish that cover: protected types, gathering methods, pot construction and use.

From Te Arai Point, Auckland to Cape Runaway telson clipping is required for all recreationally harvested spiny rock lobsters. The last third of the telson (central part of the tail fan) must be cut off so that it is noticeably shorter than the other sections of the tail fan. This must be done to all legal spiny rock lobsters as soon as they are taken.

Labelled diagram of a telson-clipped lobster [PDF, 551 KB]

Do not telson clip any packhorse rock lobsters.

Who would be keen for a local dive at Waiake Beach and Browns Bay Reef for a clean-up followed by a BBQ.?  We have done this in the past and have collected an amazing amount of rubbish. Who would be keen for a local dive at Waiake Beach and Browns Bay Reef for a clean-up followed by a BBQ.?  We have done this in the past and have collected an amazing amount of rubbish. We will need a couple of small boats to ferry divers to the reef, a few shore people to clean up the beach area etc.  Let’s organise a date at the next meeting on the 12th.   See you there.

29 June 2020

Hi Everyone

Great to see those that are out there enjoying what NZ has to offer, and I hear a lot of diving is taking place amongst the Members.  My turn next weekend diving Deep Water Cove to try out my new wet suit and booties, I am sure I will be much warmer.

The offer still stands from Air Technology – 20 Constellation Drive, Mairangi Bay – (corner Ascension Place and Constellation Drive)

During June and July  2020, Hasan is offering a free regulator check.  In case your regulator needs a complete service $25.00 discount will be redeemable towards that service.

Ring Hasan Soykan  09 478 9995  021 264 0107 or email or hasan@airtec.co.nz  to book your regulator in.

Denis is working on the July newsletter at the moment. If you have anything you would like to add to the newsletter, stories, photos or advertise for sale, contact Denis da.triden@gmail.com and he will insert in the July issue.

If you would like to get the Club Logo on any article of your clothing, please bring it to the next Club Meeting and Denis will get it embroidered for you.  The article can be a favourite, as long as it is not too worn, or a new item you have purchased.  We have used the same firm out South for years, the cost will be around $7 per garment.

Thanks to those that have paid their Membership, there are still a few outstanding.  Also thanks to Matt Gouge for working on our new website, all a new learning curb for Matt.  Check it out for the new info Matt has added.  www.dolphinunderwater.co.nz

We had our mid-year winter meal at the Bays Club, Browns Bay.  It was well attended and the food was wonderful.  A great catch up for many.  We need to do it again soon.
